Aleksandra Słyż (Live)

She/her
Thursday 11 May — Concertgebouw

Aleksandra Słyż explores the sonic connections between acoustic instruments and modular synthesizers. She is a Polish sound artist, composer and sound engineer. With ‘Softness, Flashes, Floating Rage’ Słyż wants to incorporate the acoustical movements and force one makes when producing sound from an instrument – a finger pressing on a string or the amount of air pressure that is needed to blow on a trumpet. Using factors such as dissonances, tension and pulse, Słyż tries to intertwine these movements together with synthetical straining drone sounds resulting in an unexpected structure of microtonality and resonance. She will be supported by Judith Hamann on the cello and Gerard Lebik on alto saxophone.

Alexandra currently lives between Poznań, Poland and Stockholm, Sweden. Since 2017, Słyż has been conducting artistic research into movement sonification, which led to interactive installations using sound as the main medium. Last year, she released two extraordinary releases, ‘Everything tends towards chaos and order’ and the album ‘A Vibrant Touch’, in which she strongly anchors her musical principles. She is a member of We are Europe and SHAPE+ and presented her works at various music and film festivals across Europe and the USA, including Avant Art Festival (Wroclaw), Between Festival (Stockholm) and CTM Festival (Berlin)

On stage, Alexandra is joined by cellist and composer Judith Hamann and improvisation and composing artist Gerard Lebik. Judith is a cellist and performer/composer from Narrm/Melbourne. Their work consists of performing, improvisation, electro-acoustic composition and site-specific generative work.

Gerard is an experimental sound artist and saxophonist from Poland. He explores research methods of sound, focusing on issues such as the perception and propagation of sound waves and time disorder.

Aleksandra Słyż is part of the festival opening concert at Concertgebouw, in collaboration with Éntree on Thursday 11 May. She is performing together with Judith Hamann and Gerard Lebik.
