Katarina Gryvul & Alex Guevara (Live AV)

Fri 12 May — Noordwaards

Katarina Gryvul is a Ukrainian born composer and sound artist. Her work focuses on a variety of timbres and sound textures resulting in a mixture between organic classical sounds together with ambient electronic music. For this year's festival, she will do a collaborative performance together with the Peruvian digital artist Alex Guevara.

Expect a performance filled with catharsis and emotional release. It will be an intense and immersive experience that reflects on the personal and artistic journey of Katarina and Alex . The glitchy and distorted visuals will reflect on the fragmented and chaotic nature of Alex, while Katarina's music provides a cathartic release that allows us to process and translate these events. She will use recordings of her heavy, anxious breathing from her first panic attacks she experienced when Russia invaded Ukraine.

The performance was created as part of the long-term Rybachka initiative by Borshch magazine editor Mariana Berezovska. Rybachka aims to bring together artists from different backgrounds to deconstruct pain together, raise awareness of the less obvious consequences of war and violent conflict and seek ways of healing through artistic means. The development of the premiere and the Rybachka project was supported by CTM Festival.

Gryvul studied in Lviv and Krakow at the Music Academy. Currently, she is studying computer music and sound art at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. Her pieces were performed at festivals such as: Warsaw Autumn, Ars Electronica, CTM Festival, Ephemera Festival, ZKM -next generation 9.0 and many others.

Guevara is based in Berlin. His work mostly shifts between digital and physical worlds, aiming to create immersive landscapes. His works have been presented at international festivals, art centres and exhibitions worldwide such as Berlin Art Week, Mutek in Montreal, Asia Digital Art Exhibition in Beijing, Art+Science in Belgrade, CCCB: Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona,  Lunchmeat in Prague, National Taichung Theater in Taiwan, among others.
