Studio Above&Below (Lecture)

Saturday 13 May — De Brakke Grond (In-person)

Studio Above & Below creates immersive experiences which deal with the hidden connections between humans, machines, and the environment. They believe in research-based art and work often with scientists, communities, culture and technology institutions to explore potential ways towards a more sustainable future. During FIBER’s Symposium, they will give an in-depth talk about their recent research and design for their installation Meditative Cohabitation. Meditative Cohabitation is an immersive experience and speculative future scenario which explores an ecosystem in regards to the present and future coexistence between humans and non-human species. The project looks into bioacoustics and interspecies communication and aims to translate communication signals and environmental real-time data into an AV artwork.

Studio Above & Below will introduce their process of thinking, research, processes and technologies which they have used throughout their recent body of work. They talk will provoke a new way of thinking about our interconnectivity with other ecosystems within future cities. The studio hopes to create more empathy and purpose for advanced technologies to serve more than human lifeforms, rather than humans and the economy alone.

Above & Below is a London based art and technology studio practiced by Daria Jelonek (DE) and Perry-James Sugden (UK). The studio works together with a team of programmers, CGI artists and researchers to create work within XR, digital art and data. Daria and Perry graduated from the Royal College of Art. Their work has been shown internationally at institutions and festivals including the Royal Academy, Tate Modern, V&A London, Nottingham Contemporary, Photophore during the Venice Biennale, HeK Basel, MEET Milan, NRW Forum, UCCA Shanghai, Today Art Museum, WRO Biennale, WIRED Japan, and Sonar+D.
